Unlike side effects, which are predictable undesirable effects related to a drug, adverse reactions are unpredictable. Adverse reactions may occur when starting a new drug, stopping a drug, or changing the dose of the drug (FDA, 2022). Mild adverse reactions do not require treatment or prolonged hospitalization. Moderate adverse reactions require a modification of the treatment plan or prolonged hospitalization; however, the drug does not necessarily have to be discontinued. A severe adverse reaction can potentially be life threatening and requires immediate treatment and discontinuation of the drug. A lethal adverse reaction directly or indirectly leads to death (Merck & Co., 2023).Allergic ReactionsAn allergic reaction occurs when the immune system responds to a substance, including a drug.
